MEET OUR MEMBERS: GREG

It’s been eight months since Greg signed off his 40-year career with Toronto Paramedic Services in November 2019. Yet, his new life as a retired man has not yet sunk in. As Greg begins to get used to retirement, he thinks about his life as a paramedic. It was one of his high school friends who instilled in him the desire to become a paramedic. Back then, being on the road, working with people and experiencing the adrenaline rush of responding to emergencies was enticing enough to sign up for this career.

He was quick to realize though that the profession was far from the glamourous portrayals on television shows. Yet, the gratification of helping people in need was rewarding enough to stick around.

The desire to help people extends to his family as well – both of Greg’s sons are paramedics. And his last day at work was especially memorable, working alongside his sons. “I guess the table talk at dinner and stuff like that were interesting to the kids. My wife is a nurse and my daughter recently became one. I guess we are stuck in the medical profession,” says Greg laughing.

After much thought and planning over the last couple of years, Greg is looking forward to traveling around Canada and relaxing. His advice for people planning to retire? Do not leave it to the last minute, start planning financially for your retirement!

“Back in the day, we were the ambulance drivers and attendants, we were mainly the transport system for hospitals. We didn’t have medicine or even quipment to check a patient’s heart. Now we bring the emergency room right to the patient."
